Exuberant Adoption: iOS 6 will dominate rich media ad traffic by end of week

We have always known that users of iPhones are much quicker to update their software than an Android, but this week we’ve seen that trend in the extreme. After reading this Engadget article:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/ios-6-becomes-15-percent-of-apple-mobile-device-traffic-in-24h/

which stated that within 24 hours 15% of all iOS traffic was on iOS 6, we did a check of our own log files to see how that matched up to the number of ad impressions we served to iPhones.

Crisp saw amazing numbers as well. By Friday afternoon we saw roughly 28.7% of traffic on iOS 6. What we did not expect was that 4 days later, Tuesday 9/25 we would see nearly half of all iPhone traffic, or 46.7% would have come from updated iOS 6 devices.

To compare, Android 4.1 Jellybean users only made up 2.5% of all Android smartphone users and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which has been on the market for more than 8 months is only up to 19.7% for all Android smartphone ad traffic.

To put this into context, what this means is that iPhone will remain the standard for most cutting edge audience in terms of the types of ad features that can be delivered with broad reach. For example, iOS 6 makes it possible to offer user generated image uploads which we now know could be delivered to nearly half of our iPhone audience. Even if Android creates amazing features in their latest OS versions, we will have to wait nearly a whole year and we still will likely not reach a majority of consumers.
